Petrified wood specimens, formed by the introduction of minerals into natural wood, were donated to the APS as early as 1783 and as late as 1924. As one of the foremost American scientific repositories, it was common for the APS to receive such items of natural history as part of its “Cabinet of Curiosities.” Little remains of this collection, most of which was largely donated to institutions with a greater focus on natural history, such as the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. |
