Half-length portrait, body turned towards his right, hands holding book. Subject has short middle parted gray hair and mustache, and blue eyes. Figure wears dark suit, waistcoat, and tie with small fleur-de-lis pattern, white winged-collar shirt and pearl stick pin. Signed "G. W. Pettit" on lower left corner. |

Possibly painted after the 1888 or 1898 photograph by Franz Meinen. William Pepper was a physician and former provost of the University of Pennsylvania, but is most well known for founding the Free Library of Philadelphia. |
