Herman Haupt was a highly regarded railroad engineer and inventor. During the Civil War, Haupt was appointed by Edwin M. Stanton as Chief of the bureau to build and repair all military railroads. The artist, Anna Margaretta Archambault, was the director of the Philadelphia School of Miniature Painting. She painted this after his death in 1905, possibly from a photograph. |
