Description |
Deep, brown bowl patterned with large red and blue flowers with green leaves and winding red branches. Two small carved handles are attached near the top of the bowl. Matching pair of vases are 2009.51a & b; third vase is 2009.56. |

This cloisonné bowl, along with 2009.56 and 2009.57, was owned by William Ezra Lingelbach, Librarian of the American Philosophical Society from 1942-1958. He oversaw the moving of the library collection from Philosophical Hall to its current location, Library Hall. Lingelbach was also professor of modern European history and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. Cloisonné refers to an enameling technique, in which metal strips are soldered to a surface in the outline of a design and then filled with enamel paste. Cloisonné was popularized in China, and Western societies reproduced Chinese-style designs. |
