This is one of two portraits in the APS collection of Isaac Minis Hays by Lazar Raditz. Hays, a physician, editor, and librarian, edited the "American Journal of Medical Sciences" and published a calendar (detailed catalogue) of Benjamin Franklin's papers, as well as a chronology of Franklin's life. As secretary and librarian of the APS, Hays was instrumental in organizing the bicentennial of Franklin's birth in 1906. With national support, the bicentennial included political delegations, lectures, and a ceremony at Franklin's grave. Hays was also dean of the Wistar Association. In 1917, the Association commissioned this portrait to mark its centennial and the 21st year of Dr. Hays' leadership. Lazar Raditz, the artist, was a Russian-born painter who spent most of his career as a portraitist in Philadelphia. |
