John Gottlieb Ernestus Heckewelder, a German-American Moravian missionary, spent half a century living among such Native American tribes as the Delaware and Mahican. He was the author of "An Account of the History, Manners, and Customs of the Indian Natives, Who Once Inhabited Pennsylvania and the Neighboring States," published in 1818. Heckewelder helped found a village for Christian Delawares in Ohio, and later in life, helped the United States government negotiate several treaties with Native Americans in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. Originally attributed to John Lewis Krimmel, this portrait may be a loose copy of the confirmed Krimmel portrait of Heckewelder in the APS collection (58.P.32). The style suggests it may have been completed by a self-taught artist. |
