This medal was likely struck in 1828 as a seal or medal for the Académie Nationale de Lyon. Founded in 1700, the Académie (also known as the Académie des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de Lyon) did not have an official seal until 1827. The image chosen depicted the ancient temple of Roma and Augustus with the name “Athenaeum Lugdunensis Restitutum,” linking the institution to the ancient Roman name of Lyon. This medal may not have been the official seal of the organization, as their description of the opposite side does not include the face of Apollo, but it was designed in honor of the Académie. Designer of the medal, Jean-Jacques Barré later became engraver-general at the Paris Mint. He influenced French currency and medallic art during the several decades of his activity. |
