David Steuart Erskine, the 11th Earl of Buchan, was a well educated Scottish lord who was interested in many subjects: he contributed to literary publications and wrote biographies and essays. He loved the United States and claimed a relationship with George Washington with whom he corresponded. Washington proposed him for membership in the Society in 1794 and he was duly elected that same year. (Murphy D. Smith, "Due Reverence", 1992) |
