Commissioned in the 1960s as part of the initiative to have portraits of every living president of the APS, this portrait depicts Henry Allen Moe, President of the APS from 1959 to 1970. Moe served as Secretary, Administrator, and eventually President of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, and was the first director of the National Endowment for the Humanities. A recipient of an honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Laws from Oxford University, Moe suggested to the artist that he be depicted in his D.C.L. academic robes. Franklin Watkins, the artist, was also a member of the APS and was known as one of the most original and dynamic portrait painters in the mid-20th century. |
