This medal commemorates the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Archaeological Society at Athens. The society, established in 1837 by scholars and politicians to properly care for ancient Greek architecture and antiquities, carried out a number of projects, such as excavations on the Acropolis and the restoration of the Parthenon. The centennial celebration was held in October,1938, and included international delegates, speeches, and visits to many ancient sites. |
