An illustration printed from this plate was used in a special issue of "Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society," commemorating the centenary of Charles Darwin’s birth in 1909. The plate was created by Illman Poros, a Philadelphia printer, after an etching by French printmaker Léopold Joseph Flameng, which in turn was copied from an original painting by John Collier. Collier’s portrait of Darwin was painted for the Linnaean Society, London, in 1881, where it still hangs in the Society’s meeting room. The APS most likely kept this printing plate as a memento of the centenary celebration. |
