Audubon Plate - Baltimore Oriole Obverse: Painted on plate well are two male and one female Baltimore Orioles. Surrounding them is a variety of large tree leaves and flowers. Lip is covered by a large black lined floral pattern with brown pinecones, light orange and green flowers. Reverse: "BALTIMORE ORIOLE / THE BIRDS OF AMERICA / FROM ORIGINAL DRAWINGS BY / JOHN JAMES AUDUBON / Printed from fine engravings, coloured by hand." Portrait of Audubon with shotgun in center. Manufacturer's mark of "ADAMS / ENGLAND / ESTB. 1657" at bottom. |

John James Audubon began publishing his famed "Birds of America, from Drawings Made in the United States and their Territories" in 1827. A naturalist, artist, and ornithologist, Audubon was born in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), lived in France as a child, and moved to the United States at the age of 18. The APS was an original subscriber to "Birds of America," and the Library houses the elephant folio of the publication today. These ceramic plates were issued by the Adams Staffordshire Pottery between 1948 and 1969 as the second series of "Birds of America" plates. |
