Swedish inventor Nicholas Collin, who was also the pastor of the Gloria Dei Church in Philadelphia, designed this model of an elevator as a fast way to ascend and descend heights for multiple purposes. Collin suggested the elevator could be used as a fire ladder, for the raising of a light, and for lifting up a person for military reconnaissance. He submitted the model for the Magellanic Premium, a medal awarded by the APS, which he received in 1804. |
