Isaac Minis Hays, a physician, editor, and librarian, served as editor of the "American Journal of Medical Sciences" and published a Calendar of Franklin Papers and a chronology of Benjamin Franklin's life. As Secretary and Librarian of the APS, he promoted the idea of celebrating the bicentennial of Benjamin Franklin's birth in 1906. With national support, the bicentennial included political delegations, lectures, and a ceremony at Franklin's grave. Hays' fellow APS members presented a silver loving cup (2009.102) and tray to Hays, who "first devised the scheme of a National and International Celebration of the Two hundredth Anniversary of the Birth of Benjamin Franklin." Hays is also credited with having revived the energy of the APS, increasing membership and attendance. |
