Half-length figure, turned slightly to his right. Subject has very short gray hair with a receding hairline, bushy gray sideburns with a mustache, gray-brown eyebrows and blue eyes. Wearing a dark blue coat, waistcoat, bow cravat, and white shirt. Gray-brown background. Inscribed: "General I. J. Wistar at age of 59/B. Uhle pinxt." on back. Unsigned/undated on front. |

Isaac Jones Wistar, elected to the APS in 1893, served as Councillor (1896-1898, 1903-1905), Vice-President (1899-1903), and President (1902-1903). He trained as a lawyer and served as a Brigadier General during the Civil War. Wistar was involved in founding the Wistar Institute, which continued the scientific and medical work of his great-uncle, Caspar Wistar. This portrait was commissioned by APS members and executed by Philadelphia portrait painter Bernhard Uhle after his 1888 original (unknown location). |
