Reverse: "Né à St. Julien (Rhône), le XII juillet MDCCCXIII, mort à Paris le X février MDCCCLXXVIII" along perimeter. "Membre de l'Académie Française, de l'Académie des sciences. Professeur au Collège de France, au Muséum. Commandeur de la Légion d'honneur" in center, surrounded by laurel wreath tied in bow at bottom. Presented to the APS along with the papers of Peyton Rous (APS Library). |

This medal was struck in 1879 to commemorate Claude Bernard, a 19th-century French physiologist who had died the previous year. Bernard was one of the founders of experimental medicine. The designer, Alfred Borrel, was a well-known medallist and was awarded several prizes for his medals in the late 19th century. |
