Edward Drinker Cope was a zoologist and paleontologist, best-known for his research on vertebrate paleontology, necessitating exploration of the western states and territories in search of fossils. He was elected to the APS in 1866 and served as Councillor from 1885-1891. After his death in 1897, scientist Henry Fairfield Osborn praised Cope, noting, "Only to a few men with the light of genius is it given to push the world's human thought along." |
