This watch, made by Swiss watchmaker Duchene Brothers & Co., was owned by 19th-century physician and Arctic explorer (and member of the APS) Elisha Kent Kane. Kane’s two expeditions to the Artic in the 1850s to to locate missing British explorer Sir John Franklin and his crew made him a celebrated American hero. He died in Havana at the age of 37, and thousands gathered to watch his funeral procession from New Orleans to Philadelphia before he lay in state in Independence Hall. Kane likely wore this watch while on his Arctic expedition. |
