This medal was issued by the Academy of Athens to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Archaeological Society at Athens. The society, founded in 1837 by a group of scholars and politicians to properly care for ancient Greek architecture and antiquities, carried out a number of projects, such as excavations on the Acropolis and the restoration of the Parthenon. The centennial celebration was held in October,1938, and included international delegates, speeches, and visits to many ancient sites. During the centennial celebrations, this gold medal of the Academy was conferred upon the Archaeological Society. The Academy of Athens was founded in 1926 as the Academy of Sciences, Humanities, and Fine Arts. |
