Relief profile portrait of a man facing his right. He has short hair with an angular nose, and is looking slightly upwards. He wears a toga that is pinned with a circular clasp at the shoulders. White on black jasper dip. "SIR JOSEPH BANKS" at bottom, "WEDGWOOD/O" impressed on back. Possibly after 1779 model by John Flaxman. |

Sir Joseph Banks (APS 1787) was a famed botanist who participated in Captain Cook's first voyage and other expeditions in search of new plant species. He also advocated for the British exploration of Australia and Africa. He brought tens of thousands of species back to England and developed the Royal Botanical Gardens. He was president of the Royal Society for 41 years. |
