Description |
Landscape engraving of Gray's Ferry on the Schuylkill River. In the center foreground a group of men huddle with two men on horses to the left of them on the pier. A flag on a flagpole is in the left foreground and to the right of the flagpole is a tall wooden post with a rope running to another tall post in the center. A botanical archway leads to rows of shrubbery down the pier. The Schuykill River stretches to a background of a hilly landscape with trees and a couple of small buildings. Published as an engraving in "The Columbian Magazine" August 1, 1787, opp. p. 565. Plate inscribed, "C.W. Peale delin J. Trenchard Sculp." Below the plate inscribed, "An East View of GRAY'S FERRY, near Philadelphia; with the TRIUMPHAL ARCHES, &c. erected for the Reception of General Washington, April 20th 1789." |
