Isaac Minis Hays held positions at the Society as Secretary and Librarian from 1897-1922. As acting librarian, Hays began to suggest measures of reform for the Society and his duties grew until he was, in effect, the first executive officer. At this time interest in the Society was reawakened and plans were soon made to build another building and abandon Philosophical Hall. The library was bursting at the seams and the members did not have enough rooms for meetings. Hays determined to leave his residual estate to the Society to help furnish the rooms in the proposed building to endow it for future use. In 1974 the residuary estate was settled, and in keeping with the terms of the will, most of the furnishings were sold. The Society had been unable to move from Philosophical Hall and build a new building so the furnishings were not needed for the purpose that Hays had planned. A few items of the furniture were retained by the Society. (Murphy D. Smith, "Due Reverence," 1992) |
