Half-length figure, head turned slightly to his left. Wearing dark gray coat and waistcoat, white shirt, black cravat. Subject has dark brown hair, mustache, and full beard, blue-gray eyes, a lined forehead, and indented nose bridge. Dark gray background. Possibly after 1889 portrait by Bernard Uhle, who possibly copied a photograph. |

Joseph Leidy (APS 1849) is one of the fathers of American Paleontology. He was an avid supporter of Darwin and his evolutionary theories, and published over 500 highly regarded texts on anatomy and paleontology. He founded the biology department at the University of Pennsylvania and was a former President of the Wagner Free Institute of Philadelphia. |
