Three-quarter length seated figure, legs crossed, his left hand on arm of chair, his right hand in lap. Wearing red and gray academic robes over black coat, waistcoat, tie, white collared shirt, with a gold watch chain looped through a waistcoat buttonhole. He has short, gray-white hair and mustache with bright, blue eyes, spectacles, a small mouth, and a rosy complexion. Light gray background. Signed: "Vonnoh 1924" lower right corner. |

Geologist and paleontologist William Berryman Scott was elected to the APS in 1886. He served as Curator (1902-1903), Vice-President (1903-1918), President (1918-1925), and Councillor (1929-1933). Scott was a descendant of Benjamin Franklin. He attended and later taught geology at Princeton University. The artist, Robert William Vonnoh, was one of the earliest painters to introduce European impressionism to America and was a highly regarded academic portrait painter. Vonnoh painted more than 500 commissioned portraits. |
