Leonard Carmichael was President of the APS from 1970 to 1973. A noted psychologist, his research focused on the contributions of heredity and environment to the development of behavioral patterns. After earning his PhD at Harvard, Carmichael taught at Princeton, became Professor, Dean, and President of Tufts University, and was Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. This portrait was executed by Albert K. Murray, a Cornell graduate best known for his work as a combat artist. In 1966, Murray also executed a portrait of William Jacob Robbins for the APS (1966.01). |
