Arlin Marvin Adams was born in Philadelphia in 1921. After attending Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania Law School and serving in the Navy during World War II, he became Secretary of Public Welfare for Pennsylvania. He was later nominated as a judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, a position which he held for eighteen years, retiring in 1987. In 1997 he received the Philadelphia Award for exceptional civic service. He was granted numerous honorary degrees, and the University of Pennsylvania Law School and Drexel University created professorships in his name in 2005 and 2007, respectively. In 2001, Susquehanna University named a law center in his honor. Adams was elected to the APS in 1979 and served as its President from 1993 to 1999. The artist, Chen Yanning, was born in 1945 in China, where he began his career as a painter. In 1987, he moved to the United States, where he has continued as a portraitist. |
