The APS's "Cabinet of Curiosities" included many artifacts of Native American culture, sent in by amateur scientists who recognized the Society's unofficial function as a national academy of sciences in the Early Republic. This earthenware vase was found in the Upper Louisiana Territory (or Illinois Country, consisting of territory in the upper Mississippi River Valley), which had just been purchased from the French in 1803. |
