Inkstands were common desk accessories in America and Europe for hundreds of years, only decreasing in popularity in the 20th century after the introduction of fountain pens. The eagle became a common symbol of America after the Founding Fathers decided to use it on the national seal. The figure often made an appearance on American inkstands in the early republic and through the 19th century. |
