Nathaniel Chapman was a physician, medical educator, and noted member of the APS. He received a medical degree in 1801 from the University of Pennsylvania, and later became chair of theory and practice of medicine there. While publishing medical textbooks and lectures, Chapman also founded the "Philadelphia Journal of Medical and Physical Sciences," now known as the "American Journal of the Medical Sciences." In 1848, Chapman became the first president of the American Medical Association. The APS paid 125 dollars for this portrait by Samuel Bell Waugh, copied from an 1848 portrait of Chapman by Thomas Sully (now at the University of Pennsylvania). |
