In 1830, members of the APS, "desirous of having constantly before their eyes, the image of their venerated president," commissioned a portrait of Caspar Wistar. A respected physician, anatomist, and professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Wistar served as APS president from 1811 to 1814. To complete this portrait, artist Thomas Sully copied an earlier painting of Wistar by Bass Otis, now owned by Pennsylvania Hospital, where Wistar practiced. |
