This bust depicts Henry Charles Lea, Philadelphia historian and publisher. In the late 19th century Lea wrote extensively on the institutional history of the Catholic Church in the medieval period, served as director of the Library Company of Philadelphia, and was a member of the APS. The bust was sculpted by Charles Grafly, a noted Philadelphia artist who was frequently called the “Houdon of our time.” Grafly was a student and later teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and was most noted for his naturalistic portrait busts. |
