Crawford H. Greenewalt was born in 1902 in Massachusetts and raised in Philadelphia. He received a degree in chemical engineering from MIT in 1922 and worked at the DuPont chemical company for most of his career, becoming President of the company in 1948. Greenewalt focused much of his attention on the production of DuPont’s new nylons, overseeing the development of Dacron© and Lycra© synthetic fibers. During World War II, he was technical director of the Du Pont plutonium plant in Washington state. In 1942, he observed the first controlled atomic reaction at the University of Chicago stadium. Greenewalt was elected to the APS in 1954 and served as President of the Society from 1984 to 1987. He died in 1993 at the age of 91. The photographer, and famous portraitist, Yousuf Karsh, is perhaps best known for his World War II portraits of Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and other Allied leaders. |
