In 1796, the American Philosophical Society began holding contests to develop inexpensive and sturdy stoves and fireplaces to serve the needs of the "poorer class of people." This stove model, along with another in the APS collection (58.5), was submitted by the pseudonymous "Oeconomy." "Oeconomy" received the sixty-dollar premium for improvements in stoves and fireplaces in 1799, although it is unclear which particular stove gained the prize. Although the APS committee felt that "neither the principles nor the reasoning are new," the jurors saw the proposed stove as an “advantageous adaptation" worthy of the Society's recognition. It was based on refinements already in place in Europe. |
