Label The coat of arms on this plate was used by the Penn family, and also became the crest of Pennsylvania while it was a province of England. Coats of arms were part of the system of hereditary symbols originating in early medieval Europe, and many notable colonial Americans used coats of arms to identify their family and landholdings.
