Description Marble base with arrangement of bronze objects: two books, wreath, rolled manuscript with "Lois de Pennsylvania" in script and Benjamin Franklin medal. Medal contains bas-relief profile portrait of Benjamin Franklin with "BENJ. FRANKLIN NATUS BOSTON. XVII JAN. MDCCVI" around perimeter. "DUPRÉ F." on edge of bust.
Label Little is known about this paperweight, which includes on it a medal made by Augustin Dupré. Dupré was a French medallist, sculptor, and principal engraver for the French mint. He made two medals of Franklin, although their purpose is unclear. Dupré may be best-known for sketching a medal of the American Eagle, which became the basis for the design on United States coins.
