Description Dark wooden cane with metal tip and staghorn or bone handle. Wood is knobby throughout length. Top of cane has shaped plaque inscribed "M. Burrough."
Label This cane belonged to Dr. Marmaduke Burrough, a physician who served as US Consul to Calcutta in 1828 and then Veracruz from 1835-1838. Burrough is perhaps best known for purchasing and transporting a rhinoceros to the United States in 1830 from Calcutta. The animal was displayed in Philadelphia before eventually being sold to a traveling exhibit.
