Dark wooden cane with metal tip and staghorn or bone handle. Wood is knobby throughout length. Top of cane has shaped plaque inscribed "M. Burrough."
|Label||This cane belonged to Dr. Marmaduke Burrough, a physician who served as US Consul to Calcutta in 1828 and then Veracruz from 1835-1838. Burrough is perhaps best known for purchasing and transporting a rhinoceros to the United States in 1830 from Calcutta. The animal was displayed in Philadelphia before eventually being sold to a traveling exhibit.|
