Label William Welch was a medical scientist, educator, and member of the APS. He served as professor of pathology at Johns Hopkins University in 1884 and became dean of the medical school when it opened in 1893. This slide was given to the APS with the Simon Flexner papers. Flexner was a student of Welch's at Johns Hopkins, and both were crucial in the early development of the Rockefeller Institute, an institution for medical research. Simon Flexner was also a member of the APS. Both Flexner and Welch helped organize the Peking Union Medical College, the first Chinese medical school. Flexner had a number of photographs of Welch in his collection, both formal and informal.
